PORT Elizabeth will showcase its finest creative talent throughout the Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup with a contemporary fine art exhibition of new works at the Ron Belling Gallery in Park Drive from 9 June to 17 July.
Xpressions 2010 will feature the as-yet unseen work of 38 of the city’s top artists.
“It’s a proudly Port Elizabeth event as all these artists have their roots in Nelson Mandela Bay. Their outstanding work acknowledges the crucial role that art plays not only in the city, but in our country today,” says art collector Pieter Swart, who along with artist Anthony Harris, are the visionaries behind the milestone exhibition.
“We especially want visitors to the Fifa Soccer World Cup and the National Arts Exhibition to enjoy this talent too,” says Anthony, who is curator of the exhibition.
It is talent that will feature work ranging from painting and photography, through to ceramics and sculpture, by top names in the South African art world such as Charmaine Haines, Donve Branch, Vulisango Ndwandwa, Gregory Kerr, Dolla Sapeta, Lynnley Watson, Maureen Quinn, Meshack Masuku , Rob Duker, Robert Brookes and Werner Lemmer.
In short, the exhibition is a one-stop shop of Port Elizabeth’s creative crème de la crème. Further good news is that all the work on display will be for sale.
Xpressions 2010 will also feature an exhibition of soccer-inspired sculptures by sculpture students at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) outside the gallery. The winning sculpture’s creator will receive a bursary for R10 000 from the Ron Belling Art Gallery.
Visitors will be able to purchase a catalogue featuring visuals and background information on each of the artists’ work.
Sponsors of the exhibition include Business and Arts South Africa, Rand Merchant Bank, NMMU, Ron Belling Art Gallery, Spier Wines and others.
All proceeds raised will go to Wings and Wishes, a charity committed to supporting critically-ill children.
