Be Inspired, Connected & Engaged – Celebrate summer with the annual Summer School programme at Iziko Museums.
Iziko Museums is proud to host its annual multi-faceted Summer School, comprising of a series of talks, workshops and excursions from 5 to 26 February 2011. The programme provides a public platform for individuals to express their opinions and recommendations about current issues. The objective of the programme is to inspire, connect and engage the public about our country’s rich and diverse heritage. The varied programme includes topics for all interest groups, such as art, sustainable fisheries, indigenous games and the history of slavery.
The Iziko Summer School 2011 kicks off on 5 February with a public discussion, Our Nation in Conversation II, interrogating former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy and our country’s shared destiny. Panelists include renowned cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro), Judith February (IDASA) and Dennis Goldberg (Accused No.3 Rivonia Trial). An interactive Moppie (funny Carnival song) song-writing workshop takes place from 8–10 February, inspired by the Ghoema & Glitter: New Year Carnival in Cape Town exhibition, currently on display at the Iziko Good Hope Gallery, at the Castle of Good Hope.
Activities focusing on environmental issues include a Climate Change Indaba on 11 February. This discussion on creating sustainable environments, with a specific focus on youth advocacy is led by Iziko Young Ambassadors and British Council “Young Climate Change Championsâ€. The Private Lives of Spiders and their Kin, and If You Won’t Eat Your Jellyfish, Don’t Eat Your Gobies, will be presented by Norman Larsen and Prof. Mark Gibbons on 16 February. How we, as consumers, retailers and fisherman can ensure Sustainable Fisheries is a discussion scheduled for 23 February.
Join Iziko Museums scientists, Dr Wayne Florence and Dylan Clarke on 18 February for the Two Oceans Experience and explore how marine fauna are structured by biological and physical factors. End off your experience with a quick visit to the Jackass Penguin colony and a guided tour to Seal Island aboard a glass-bottomed boat for easy viewing of life in kelp forests. The film “The End of the Lineâ€, directed by Rupert Murray, will be screened on 23 February.
Delving into the rich cultural history that games such as Iintonga (stick fighting) tell, the Youth Empowerment Project will host an Indigenous Games Workshop on 19 February. Art enthusiasts can attend the Andrew Putter lecture on 24 February, for a talk about the making of his ‘African Hospitality’ series – a group of imaginary portraits based on the history of Europeans who became African after shipwrecking off the Wild Coast in the 1600s and 1700s.
A Sutherland Excursion on 5 and 6 February will include a short lecture about the geology of the Karoo and a tour of the Sutherland Observatory. Retreat to Traveller’s Rest in Northern Cedarberg, from 23–27 February and get to know the rocks, fossils, insects, and rock paintings of the Cedarberg with Iziko scientists. A Remembering Slave Route Tour will be conducted from Iziko Koopmans-de Wet House on 26 February.
Space on the walkabouts and excursions is limited and booking is essential. For further information, fee enquiries and bookings, contact Wandile Kasibe on 021 481 3804/13 or email wkasibe@iziko.org.za or publicprogs@iziko.org.za
