The annual Out the Box Festival of Puppetry & Visual Performance is taking place this year at the Baxter Theatre, the UCT Hiddingh Campus in Gardens and at the Labia Cinema on Orange Street. It is directed by Janni Younge and artistic director Jaqueline Dommisse and will once again present a visual feast of drama and dance performances, live art, workshops, talks, exhibitions and films.

The family festival promises rich, engaging theatre experiences where images, sounds and words transport audiences from as young as 3 years of age into intensely imaginative new worlds.

This year, the family festival is curated in association with Assitej SA and provides a strong showing of international work, as well as a diverse programme of new South African plays. The range of styles is extensive, from wacky and humorous to moving and profound and the works are categorised into pre-primary, primary and youth fare to make choices easier for families.

There are several shows that are aimed specifically at children, teens and young adults. Embo, Offer, Oruk, Papelixo, Rain, Storiesombrero, Tales from the Calabash, The Adventures of Little Nobody, The Golden Ring, Indlovu People, Kusanga/Njala and Lemonade, cater to the 7-12 year old age group. Teenagers up to the age of 16 will enjoy Lenny and the Wasteland and Umsintsi, and for the very young, Taxi Magic and Just Enough will be ideal.

The engaging, professional entertainment caters to a broad audience and will fire the imaginations of children and adults alike. Tickets for the festival cost from R30 to R50 via Computicket with special offers for block bookings of ten or more. Schools’ packages are also available.
