Business and Arts South Africa in the media
The Business of the Arts – Summit TV
Brought to you by Business and Arts South Africa and broadcast on Summit TV, The Business of the Arts has turned its spotlight on several arts projects and events over the recent weeks.
One of these was the 2010 Last Night of the Proms with The Business of the Arts taking a look at how Lifeline has been able to make a success of this musical extravaganza, with strong support from Kemtek Imaging Systems LTD. Appropriately for 2010 FIFA World Cup month, the show also included an in-depth feature on the Halakasha Art Exhibition being staged at the Standard Bank Gallery.
Other highlights of this popular slot include a look at the Jozi art:lab which develops and supports interdisciplinary art projects with artists from all over the world and receives German sponsorship as well as an examination of why African Footprints (staged at Emperor’s Palace’s Theatre of Marcellus) is such an enduring success.
No Jacket Required: Classic FM - Saturdays 15:00 to 16:00
Richard Cock’s well-liked show regularly highlights the relationship between current arts projects and sponsors through a series of interviews. In recent weeks, the Classic FM host has chatted to Dirk Badenhorst about the ballet ‘Carmen’ and its sponsors and Ismail Mohammed about the partners of the National Festival of the Arts (including Business and Arts South Africa). Other interviews were with Lifeline’s Judith Gordon-Drake on staging Last Night of the Proms and Leanne Gitlin of IQ Business Solutions on its support for the Such Initiative. The Spier Contemporary was also profiled on No Jacket Required.
BASA Create on SAfm
Mid-year has seen BASA Create increase its coverage of arts projects and Business and Arts South Africa members who have put their weight behind various arts initiatives. This popular weekday midday slot profiled several Business and Arts South Africa members in June including an interview with Riason Naidoo, the director of Art Collections at the Iziko South African National Gallery on the exhibition, 1910-2010: from Pierneef to Gugulethu.
Also behind the mic was Trish Downing, senior marketing and communications manager for Ster-Kinekor who spoke more about the newly-inaugurated Grolsch and Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau theatres partnership.
Other arts projects in the BASA Create spotlight were the film ‘Unhinged: Surviving Jozi’ , South African musician Lebo M on the opening ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Opera Africa, Africa Day in Yoeville, and African Fashion Week.
Business and Arts South Africa on OFM
Kultuur Kruiwa, supported by Business and Arts South Africa, has had a busy few weeks – profiling, among others, PG Bison’s sixoneeight Student Design Awards 2010 through an interview with Angus Campbell, the David Walters and Friends Exhibition at William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley via a chat with artist and curator David Walters and The Giant Match through the eyes of Laurent Clavel, director of French Institute of SA (ifas).

You can catch Radio Today on 1485 AM in the greater Johannesburg region as well as nationally and in the SADC Sub-Region on DStv Audio Channel 169.

Also interviewed in June was Natasha Tafari, who was the recipient of a trip to the Hands On! Masks Off! Workshops at the 2009 National Arts Festival.
BASA Today profiled a number of different projects during June including chatting to creator Deon Opperman and narrator Lindani Nkosi about Shaka Zulu – The Musical and Ian von Memerty about his heart-warming show, ‘Circle of Life’. Music publisher, David Alexander spoke to Zingi about his memories of the late and great Zulu musician Busi Mhlongo and art consultant Bronwyn Law-Viljoen also gave an engaging insight into what’s on in Joburg's visual arts scene. The National Arts Festival has been in the spotlight in recent weeks with Zingi talking to choreographer/dancer Dada Masilo and playwright Craig Higginson about what to expect at this year’s extended run.
