Love music? Love being South African? Love getting dressed up? Join the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, as they bring the orchestra to life at this year’s Sasol Concert. This exhilarating performance will be conducted by musician extraordinaire Gerben Grooten of the Netherlands.

The NYO provides young talented people the opportunity to boost their musical abilities on a national platform with a legacy that stretches nearly half a century. It is an environment where their musical imagination is inspired, while motivating them to always be the best they can be in all that they do.

The audience will go on a journey of discovery with our very own orchestra and experience the depth, beauty and exuberance that this music brings. In true South African style, the NYO and Archbishop Tutu will elevate the traditional orchestral experience to new heights.

“It is such a fabulous project and deserves all the support it can get. It will be an honour to be part of it,” says Archbishop Tutu.

“Everyone comes together from different places for one reason and that is to play music,” says Pascali Mokadi, a NYO violinist, about the orchestra.

Music to be played will captivate newcomers and existing fans alike. Benjamin Britten’s ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ will be performed, while narrated by Archbishop Tutu. Together, they will illuminate the inner-workings of the orchestra. The piece is one of Britten’s most popular works and is widely used in music education. In addition, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, which is a resplendent work of standard orchestral repertoire, will be played.

Expect an evening of elegance and enchantment, as our most talented young musicians strut their stuff and share their love for their craft. Join South Africa’s elite and be part of the joy of the orchestra.
