The annual SBNYJF will take place at its usual venue, concurrent with the National Arts Festival, and applications for the course are invited from young jazz players who would like to participate, and be considered for selection to the National Jazz Bands.

Date:
Wednesday 23 June (15h00) to Tues 29 June (08h00). The National Arts Festival will be extended to 15 days this year,
coinciding with the Soccer World Cup and will take place from 20 June – 3 July 2010.

Venue:
The Music School of the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), Worcester Street, Grahamstown

Participants:
Young musicians between the ages of 13 and 26 who wish to learn more about jazz, or interact with the top young players in the country. You do not have to be a member of an educational institution. A minimum of Grade 3-5 playing standard is required on any accepted Jazz instrument, but you do not need to have formal music education. Participants who attend an institution which offers music need to apply via their school / tertiary music teachers and not individually or via another school.

Daily Format:
Every day, each course participant will rehearse in a big band or vocal group and choose to attend an array of workshops and electives on jazz topics such as improvisation, jazz history, sound engineering, instrumental clinics, composition or jazz harmony. These will be led by a collection of some of the best professional jazz players and educators in the country as well as visiting foreign teachers and performers. There will be a number of opportunities for performance daily and students will also be able to listen to some of the best live jazz in South Africa, as the course lecturers will be performing each night in the DSG Hall (the SBNYJF venue) as part of the Standard Bank Jazz Festival, Grahamstown.

National Bands:
Two national bands will be chosen at the Festival: the STANDARD BANK NATIONAL SCHOOLS’ JAZZ BAND (age limit 18 on 1/1/2010, and attending high school) and the STANDARD BANK NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ BAND (age limit 26 on 1/1/2010). These bands will perform on the main jazz stage of the National Arts Festival and the SBNYJB will tour later in the year. The SBNSBB will be conducted by Terrence Scarr, and the SBNYJB by Prof Mike Campbell, and selection to these bands will be for South Africans only.

Accommodation costs:
High school students: R1350 per participant to stay on the DSG campus. This will include accommodation and all meals from Wednesday supper to Tuesday breakfast. Teachers can book single (R1500) or double (R1400) room accommodation in place of dormitories, dependent upon availability.

Tertiary students will need to make their own accommodation arrangements, and their course fee is R700, which includes lunch and supper each day at DSG. Options for accommodation are Rhodes University (046-603 8138), Victoria Girls High (046-636 1550), College of the Transfiguration (directly opposite DSG 046 – 622 3332) or Old Gaol Backpackers (046-636 1001).

Financial Assistance:
Financial assistance is available to students with very limited means to offset the costs of the SBNYJF, sponsored by Standard Bank, and the South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). No participant will receive a full scholarship, but will be considered for a part scholarship if a full application is submitted and they are financially needy.

All required detail must be included – especially signatures, ID numbers and annual income. Scholarships will not be awarded to late entries.

Transport:
Transport will be subsidised (up to R300 per person) by the SBNYJF for participants from outside the Eastern Cape so that musicians from further away are not prejudiced in what is a national festival. A Transport Subsidy application must be filled in to qualify for this, either individually or as an institution. The SBNYJF organizers do not have the capacity to offer lifts to participants to and from bus stops, airports, etc.

Closing date:
It is essential to fill in the enclosed application forms in full and submit them before the closing date. The number of SBNYJF participants will again be limited this year and there will be set numbers allocated for the number of school, tertiary and development musicians accepted. The sooner applications are made the better your chance of attending.

The final date for entries is MONDAY 15 MARCH 2010.

Enquiries:
Any queries should be directed to the NYJF Administrator, Donné Dowlman, or myself, at the addresses and telephone numbers above. Please note the festival email address, fax number, and the account for payments.
