The March 2010 conference will aim to document the many important events that have occurred throughout SAJE’s history and how it has changed over the past two decades. The theme for this year’s conference will be Jazz Education in South Africa: Past, Present and Future and will focus on formal and informal jazz education over the past 25 plus years.

The Conference will comprise 3 days of performances, workshops, research paper presentations, panel discussions, instrument & teaching material displays. However, the most important part of the conference will be goal driven and will look to document when and where jazz education initiatives were created and how they have developed in South Africa prior to and following the first democratic elections, and what challenges lie ahead. Jazz music has always reflected a rich diversity, acted as an international language and healer and has democratic values at its core.

The conference will be attended by important jazz educators/performers from the United States, Europe and the Middle East, as well as students, teachers and jazz artists from around South Africa. It will be a significant event which will showcase young Jazz talent and the work being done in education.
