New Music Indaba

Event Date: 14 - 16 October 2011

Published by Business and Arts South Africa

From 14th to 16th October, NewMusicSA presents the 2011 New Music Indaba: an intense 3 days of new music performance and workshops at the POPArt Centre, Main Street Life, Joburg CBD. The festival will feature internationally renowned Swiss musicians Roland Dahinden (trombone/alphorn/composer) and Hildegard Kleeb (piano/composer). This experienced duo have performed the music of Christian Wolf, Morton Feldman, Anthony Braxton and Duke Ellington amongst many others and have premièred and recorded a huge amount of new music. Their repertoire is eclectic and crosses the composition-improvisation and art-jazz divides. The duo will be featured in concerts where they will collaborate with the very best of Joburg's new-music talent.

Canadian artists Véronique Mathieu (violin) and Sophie Patey (piano) will also perform at the festival and Mathieu will lead a workshop-presentation on new music for violin. Their programme will include the first ever world première of a Canadian work in South Africa (Pushpangalin Mutthiraigal by Gabriel Dharmoo) and music by South African composer Robert Fokkens.

New Music Indaba 2011 is pleased to announce that Jill Richards will play Charles Ives's monumental Concord Sonata, an American 20th-Century classic, at this year’s festival. The celebrated DuoFourIVTwo percussion duo and the Chamber Choir of South Africa, directed by Classic FM's Michael Dingaan, can also be heard in concert during the weekend -- don't miss out on these great performances!
